BOMBSHELL INVESTIGATION: Geelong Cats midfielder Tanner Bruhn reportedly under security scrutiny following past allegations, raising fresh questions around the Geelong Cats star’s controversial return to the field…

The return of Tanner Bruhn to the AFL spotlight has sparked renewed discussion across the football world, as the young midfielder’s comeback for the Geelong Cats arrives after one of the most controversial periods of his career. While Bruhn delivered an impressive on-field performance during Geelong’s opening-round clash with the Gold Coast Suns, the circumstances surrounding his absence last season continue to attract significant attention.

Bruhn, 23, had been sidelined throughout the 2025 AFL season after serious criminal charges were brought against him. The allegations, which included rape and intentional sexual touching, resulted in the AFL standing the midfielder down while legal proceedings unfolded. The case quickly became one of the most talked-about off-field controversies in recent AFL history, placing the rising star’s career in limbo and leaving fans and analysts wondering whether he would ever return to the professional stage.

However, the situation took a dramatic turn late last year. In November, prosecutors dropped the charges after a key witness admitted to providing false information during the investigation. With the case no longer proceeding, the AFL cleared Bruhn to return to the game, opening the door for him to resume his career with the Cats.

Despite the legal outcome, the situation continues to generate debate across the sporting community. Some supporters believe Bruhn deserves the opportunity to rebuild his career after the charges were dismissed, while others argue the controversy has left lingering questions that will follow him for some time.

For Geelong coach Chris Scott, however, the focus remains firmly on football. Speaking after the Cats’ opening-round defeat to the Suns, Scott emphasized that Bruhn’s return had already made a noticeable impact on the team.

Geelong suffered a heavy loss in the match, falling 19.11 (125) to 10.9 (69) after trailing by as much as 85 points late in the third quarter. The Suns dominated large stretches of the game, with debutant Christian Petracca delivering a standout performance. Petracca finished with three goals and a game-high 34 disposals, helping the Suns secure a commanding victory against last year’s grand finalists.

While the result was disappointing for Geelong, Bruhn’s performance provided a rare bright spot. Playing his first AFL game since the 2024 preliminary final, the midfielder recorded a team-high 31 disposals along with four inside-50 entries and two score assists. His work rate, composure, and ability to drive the ball forward stood out even as the Cats struggled collectively.

Scott admitted after the match that Bruhn’s absence had been deeply felt throughout the previous season.

“There were some positives,” Scott said when reflecting on the defeat. “It’s always difficult to say that immediately after a loss like this, but of all the positives tonight, Tanner’s performance was probably the biggest.”

The Geelong coach also suggested that Bruhn’s skill set would have been invaluable during the Cats’ 2025 campaign.

“If anything, it’s frustrating we didn’t have him last year,” Scott explained. “He’s the type of player who can make a real difference in tight games. We missed his ball use and his engine around the contest.”

Scott also revealed that he was impressed by Bruhn’s physical condition after such a long break from top-level football.

“What surprised me the most is just how good he is physically,” Scott added. “After everything he’s gone through, to come back and perform like that says a lot about his preparation and mindset.”

The Cats’ opening-round loss was also compounded by the absence of two key veterans, Jeremy Cameron and Patrick Dangerfield, who were ruled out due to injury concerns. Scott said neither player felt ready to return for the Suns clash, though both are expected to be available for Geelong’s upcoming match against the Fremantle Dockers.

Despite the heavy defeat, Scott urged fans and commentators not to overreact to the result.

“We’ll remain calm,” he said. “There were some skill errors and some players who probably weren’t at their best physically, but we’ll address those issues and move forward.”

For Bruhn, the road back to AFL football has been anything but straightforward. The past year has tested his resilience both personally and professionally, and his return inevitably places him under intense scrutiny from the public and media alike.

Nevertheless, his performance against the Suns suggests that the midfielder still possesses the talent that once made him one of the league’s most promising young players. If he continues to produce performances like the one he delivered in Carrara, Bruhn could quickly become a central figure in Geelong’s push to return to premiership contention.

For now, though, the spotlight remains firmly on the young star as he attempts to rebuild his career and reputation in the AFL. Whether his comeback ultimately becomes one of redemption or continued controversy will depend on what unfolds in the months ahead.

One thing is certain: Tanner Bruhn’s return has already become one of the most talked-about storylines of the AFL season.
