Born on November 2, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in Amarillo, Texas, Souther’s early musical journey led him to Los Angeles in the late 1960s. There, he formed the duo Longbranch Pennywhistle with Glenn Frey, a partnership that laid the groundwork for future collaborations. Frey would later co-found the Eagles, and Souther became a pivotal collaborator, co-writing some of the band’s most iconic hits, including “Best of My Love,” “New Kid in Town,” and “Heartache Tonight.”

Souther’s association with Linda Ronstadt was both professional and personal. He co-wrote several songs for her, contributing to her rise as a leading figure in the country-rock genre. Their close relationship further cemented his influence in the music scene of that era.
