Lions Projected to Target ‘Lightning Speed’ to Begin Fixing Pass Defense
The Detroit Lions are unlikely to improve their pass defense with one addition. But CBS Sports’ Kyle Stackpole suggested Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins could be the first piece to improving a secondary that ranked 27th in the NFL in yards allowed last season.Stackpole took Wiggins 29th overall by the Lions in the February 16 NFL Draft.”If the Lions want to make their first Super Bowl appearance, they need to improve their pass defense,” Stackpole wrote. “Nate Wiggins, with his 6-foot frame and lightning rod, would be a great start to improving the secondary.” 4,444 4,444 Stackpole joined The Ringer’s Ben Solak and NFLmocks.com’s Cody Spears as draft experts who have Wiggins taken 29th overall by the Lions since the Super Bowl.Where Nate Wiggins Could Land in the 2024 DraftRecent NFL drafts have seen some of the top picks at cornerback. But that doesn’t seem to be the case this year. Not that the 2024 draft class doesn’t have great cornerback potential. NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah had five cornerbacks among the top 32 players on Jan. 30.But with no consensus on the position this year, it’s a bit unpredictable where each cornerback could land.ESPN’s big board has Wiggins rated as the top cornerback and the No. 11 overall prospect in the Class of 2024. Pro Football Focus has Wiggins rated as the top cornerback and No. 13 in total. fall for the Lions at No. 29.However, Wiggins is ranked seventh among cornerbacks and 50th overall in Bleacher Report’s big draft. Jeremiah ranks Wiggins as the fifth-ranked cornerback and 30th overall. With Wiggins’ draft polarizing, it will be interesting to see how he does in the offseason. Those performances could significantly change his draft position. It could also factor into whether the Lions targeted Wiggins on draft night. How Wiggins would fit with the LionsWhile Detroit’s interest in Wiggins has yet to be determined, the Lions could be anyone in the first round of the NFL draft. In addition to ranking 27th in pass defense, the Lions finished 29th in net yards allowed per pass attempt during the 2023 season. They also allowed 28 passing touchdowns. Only five teams pledged more.Landing Wiggins would also give the Lions something they didn’t have much of in the secondary last season – speed.”Wiggins is a tall, tall cornerback with excellent speed. He is effective in the press,” Jeremiah wrote. “Overall, Wiggins is full of athleticism and physicality, but he needs to work harder on the run.”The Lions were very committed to stopping the run in 2023. They were fifth in yards and yards allowed. Additionally, no team allowed fewer rushing touchdowns. One possible concern in Detroit drafting Wiggins is the possibility of the team’s defense weakening. But with defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn back, that will likely be less of an issue. The Lions’ late first-round targets are not finished products. But when it comes to a speedy cornerback who can contribute significantly in pass coverage, this is a step in the right direction for Detroit’s defense..
