Done deal: Pittsburgh Steelers have finally appoint Arthur Smith as their new offensive coordinator on…

Pittsburgh wasted little time interviewing Arthur Smith to hire him as the Steelers’ next offensive coordinator. According to SI’s Albert Breer, it was intentional. Smith agreed to a three-year deal to become the team’s next OC and canceled plans to visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And there are many more trips to come.In his latest column, Breer says Smith was on vacation in the Maldives when he scheduled his interview with the Steelers. He flew to Pittsburgh and planned to interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tomlin stopped him from getting on the plane.”He met with Tomlin on Monday and Tuesday and planned to travel to Tampa on Tuesday night and interview for the OC job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” Breer wrote. “But with Smith’s ingenuity, playmaking, overall offensive creativity and work with the quarterbacks, the Steelers and Tomlin saw fit and then worked to keep him off the plane to Florida.”Breer added that six teams are interested in talking to Smith as an offensive coordinator or assistant. Smith told Tomlin that Pittsburgh would be his first stop. As it turned out, that was his only stop. It’s worth noting that the Steelers announced Smith’s interview on Sunday instead of Monday, but the specifics of the schedule no longer matter much.Tampa Bay had a coordinator vacancy after losing new head coach Dave Canales to the Carolina Panthers. Geographically, it would be a better fit for Smith, who was born in Tennessee, coached the Titans for years and just completed a three-year stint in Atlanta.Instead, he replaces Matt Canada as the team’s permanent offensive coordinator. RBs coach Eddie Faulkner took over the running back role while QBs coach Mike Sullivan ran the plays. If Sullivan doesn’t get the coordinator job in Las Vegas or New Orleans, he expects to stay with the team. Barring Smith’s hiring and perhaps one or two other minor changes, the Steelers’ offensive line could look much the same in 2024.Smith is the team’s second offensive or defensive coordinator since 2001. Todd Haley was the second to be hired as the Steelers OC in 2012 and spent five seasons with the team. While Smith isn’t considered a top pick, he’s also not the exciting prospect that other names would have presented. But he was highly valued by the NFL and needed someone to coordinate the offense this season. Now it’s Pittsburgh’s..
