Manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted ahead of Wednesday’s game against Crystal Palace that Chelsea’s job was tougher than he expected.
Chelsea are nearing the halfway point of the season, having lost eight of their 18 Premier League games this season, and are now down to just 22 points after losing to Wolves on Christmas Eve.
“We knew this year was going to be tough, but it never turned out to be that tough,” Pochettino said.
“The situation is even worse because of all the circumstances (injuries and suspensions).
” But at the same time it’s a good challenge,” added the Argentine.
And Pochettino insists he has fallen short of his expectations since taking over in the summer, insisting his goal is to lead Chelsea to the top of the Premier League.
They currently sit 10th, level on points with Wolves and Bournemouth.
